Conference Presentation

September 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Will you by any chance by in Vancouver, BC Oct 31-Nov 3? If so, lets connect at the International Leadership Association Annual Conference. I will be doing a presentation as part of a panel entitled  Archetypal Leadership as a Stream of Consciousness in Leadership Theory.

Here is the abstract for my portion of the presentation:

“Cambell (1949), and later Pearson (1991) describe the archetype of the hero, one who leaves the known to discover and explore the unknown in search of his personal destiny. This individual braves loneliness and isolation to seek out new paths, encountering friends and foes, conflicts and victory along the way. This archetype can be useful for understanding one’s identity as a leader, as it highlights one’s uniqueness, perspectives, and callings as a human and leader. This presentation will explore the construct of calling which can support this particular archetype, and show how individuals with an expressed sense of calling are indeed those who have traveled through various life stages of self-discovery and awareness to pursue and confirm this sense of personal destiny. It will show the calling-emergence process as one that is often turbulent, and one which develops over time in five unique stages. Further, it will shed new light on the concept of calling which is distinct from other extant notions, which often focus on the positive and beneficial aspects of calling. It will be seen that the calling process can be fraught with painful relational conflicts and wrestling with strongly held previous selves, and that having a calling does not necessarily lead to a panacea of contentment and satisfaction with one’s role.”

Hope to see you there!

An abridged version of my dissertation is currently in press. It will be a chapter (chapter 11) in Qualitative Methods in Leadership Research published by Elsevier Publications and edited by Karin Klenke. Karin was my profesor and dissertation chair at Regent Univeristy and invited me to contribute to this work, and I am thrilled to do so. This is an academic oriented book, so don’t look for it at your local Borders. But you can order it when it becomes available from Elsevier

Zoom!

September 23rd, 2007 · 5 Comments

I have recently become a big fan of Zoom gear. Not too long ago I turned my nose up at what is considered by many a budget gear brand. Their guitar effects are often the entry-level for many newbies, and so I avoided their stuff like the plague. But that all changed when I saw an ad (and then purchased) the H4, a small field recorder capable of 24 bits / 44k recording, with built in condenser mics. Then I picked up the HD16, a desktop recorder with 16bit, 16 track, 8 channel recording. Here are some samples of the HD16:

On the Zoom user group I have done a review, check it out here:

Zoom HD16 review (I am AxeDoctor in case you couldn’t figure it out ; )

I also decided to give their new portable recorder, the H2 a try. Here are some samples of recordings made with this:

If you have not considered Zoom products before because of the perceive entry-level nature, you might want to check them out (no, I am not a salesman for them, just a happy customer ; )

Dissertation

September 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

On March 2, 2007 I sucessfully defended my dissertation. Here is the abstract:

Calling is an important construct within emerging areas of leadership theory. Yet, little is know about how calling is experienced in the life of a leader; particularly the context, antecedents, and consequences of calling. Narrative analysis has been cited in the literature as an ideal method for exploring heretofore little known aspects of spiritual leadership and authentic leadership. The present research utilizes narrative analysis on textual data from a sample of experienced and successful pastoral leaders in the

Western United States as exemplars of the phenomenon of calling. Using thematic content analysis to examine 12 in depth life story narratives, it was found that themes clustered into five distinct stages: (a) precalling antecedents; (b) recognition of the call through spiritual awakening and involvement; (c) realization of the call through experience, mentoring, and preparation for vocational service; (d) struggle to separate from previous relationships, roles, and identities; and (e) identity integration and the role merger of faith and work with subsequent wrestling with preferred roles and possible selves. In addition to this stage model, three distinct types of calling experiences were identified. These types were developed into prototypical cross-case calling narratives utilizing Plumber’s (1995) plot structure of suffering, crisis, and transformation. Finally, a general psychological structure of calling and leader identity formation was extrapolated from these narratives to give a clinical description of the calling experience. Implications for theory and practice along with recommendations for further research based on the developed model are also considered.

The entire research will be available via the UMI datbase. You may request a direct copy from me as well, and I will send an abbreviated version.

MXR

Here is a MXR Micro Chorus. I used this back in the early 80’s when I was playing Police and Pretender covers. It still works and sound great, though it is a bit complicated to operate with its one knob…

New Site

September 17th, 2007 · No Comments

This is my second version of frankmarkow.com. Thanks to Jeff Hansen for getting me up and running. My hope is that, with this new blog-style site, it will be easier to maintain and update. The yahoo! site was a pain in the behind, took forever to update and so I lost interest in the whole endeavor real fast. So, please check back, see what changes and how the site expands. As with my previous site, this one will feature my eclectic interests, organizational ties, as well as samples of my music.
